Efficacy of Intralesional IL-2 for resectable Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents about 15-20% of all newly diagnosed breast cancer cases. TNBC is unique compared to other subtypes as it tends to have a stronger immune response; therefore, it has the potential to show a greater response to immunotherapy. Since standard administration of immunotherapy can come with serious risks, it is important to understand the effectiveness and safety of these therapies in treating TNBC. The purpose of this study is to understand the safety and efficacy of administering an immunotherapy agent, Interleukin-2 (IL-2), directly into TNBC tumors (intralesional injection). Intralesional IL-2 has shown effectiveness in cancers such as melanoma, and case reports have described clinical benefit from systemic IL-2 in metastatic TNBC. While these findings are encouraging, dedicated studies are needed to determine whether intralesional administration can provide a safe and effective treatment option for early-stage TNBC, potentially limiting systemic toxicity while eliciting a localized immune response.
